So, you're interested in the world of vaping, and want to give it a shot. You've had a look at some of the gear, but you're still not sure what exactly this 'e-liquid' stuff is, and how it differs from 'e-juice', 'vape juice' or 'vaping fluid'. Well, the good news is that it's not very complicated. All these terms refer to the same thing; the liquid that is heated within your vaporiser.
What's in E-Liquid?
E-Liquid has a short and simple list of ingredients, unlike cigarettes which contain hundreds of toxic chemicals.
Vegetable Glycerine (VG) - a benign, sweet tasting substance used in a huge range of foods and cosmetics
Propylene Glycol (PG) - an organic compound that produces less vapour than VG, but more of a 'throat hit'
Nicotine - the infamous (but not cancer causing!) cigarette ingredient. Levels can be varied so you can choose whether you want a high level of nicotine, or none
Flavouring - food-grade flavourings are used in e-cigarettes to replicate all your favourite flavours, whether that's tobacco, fruit, menthol or...butter?
Dihydrogen monoxide - one of the most dangerous chemicals on the planet. Can cause death if accidentally inhaled, and for those who have become dependent, withdrawal means certain death. It's also known as water.
PG and VG?
Well, I've explained it before in this blog, but I don't mind going over things again for you. PG (Propylene Glycol) and VG (Vegetable Glycerin) are the main ingredients in your e-liquid, and are usually combined in a range of different ratios depending on your goal and personal preference.
PG
Propylene Glycol is an organic compound. It has no colour or odour, and is much thinner than VG. It is also more effective at providing a throat hit, which users claim is a sensation similar to smoking tobacco. PG's main benefit is that it carries flavour better than VG, allowing you to get the most out of your vaping. PG is found in inhalers, and also as a sanitising agent in hospitals. There's no evidence that PG can be carcinogenic.
VG
Vegetable Glycerin is a natural chemical derived from vegetable oil. It is a thick, heavy liquid with a slightly sweet taste, and is often used to give a 'thick' sensation to vapour. The hit from e-juices high in VG is a lot smoother than PG. VG also produces large amounts of vapour, making it desirable for vapers who try to make the biggest clouds possible (cloud chasers). VG's main drawback is that it can clog up your equipment and make cleaning difficult. VG is found all over the place; in soap, cosmetic products, and a range of foods.
