If you're thinking of getting into vaping, learning about e-juice is one of the first things you'll need to do. E-liquid, vape juice, vaping fluid, all these terms might be confusing to someone who's new to the vaping world, but the good news is that it's not that complicated. E-juice, as well as all of these other terms, simply refer to the liquid that you heat up in your vaporiser and inhale. Want to know more? Then read on.
What's in E-Juice?
The health-conscious amongst you might be worried about what's going into your e-juice. You may even have heard stories in the news claiming that there are all sorts of dangerous chemicals lurking inside. The truth is that there aren't many ingredients, which, when compared with regular cigarettes, can only be a good thing. Here are the main components of e-liquid:
Propylene glycol (PG) - this is an organic compound, and forms the main part of the e-juice along with VG. It has no colour or odour and has a thinner consistency than VG
Vegetable glycerin (VG) - this is a natural chemical derived from vegetable oil. It is a thick, heavy liquid with a sweet taste and is effective at creating large vapour clouds
Flavouring - food-grade flavourings are used in e-cigarettes to replicate all your favourite flavours, whether that's tobacco, fruit, menthol or absinthe
Water - no explanation needed (I hope...)
Nicotine - the infamous (but misunderstood) cigarette ingredient. Levels can vary, allowing you to choose a high level of nicotine or a nicotine-free e-juice
What About Nicotine?
E-juice comes in a range of nicotine levels, and since most vapers are ex- (or current) smokers the level of nicotine often corresponds to how heavy your smoking habit is/was. E-liquids range from nicotine-free to 36mg and even higher, with a 'light strength' e-liquid considered 6mg, a 'medium' around 12mg and a 'strong' anything from 18mg upwards. Heavy smokers will probably be best starting with stronger concentrations, and gradually weaning themselves off while lowering the dose.
You may have heard some bad things about nicotine, and while its reputation isn't completely unjustified, it has been exaggerated. Nicotine is certainly addictive, but without the toxins in cigarette smoke, vaping seems to be a much healthier alternative. Nicotine itself just acts as a stimulant in small doses, much like coffee, and doesn't have the cancer-causing properties of other cigarette ingredients.
What are PG/VG Ratios?
This simply refers to the level of PG and VG in your e-liquid. PG and VG have different properties, and nearly all e-juices are made up of a combination of the two. PG gives a 'throat hit' comparable to smoking, and carries flavour better, while VG gives a smoother feel and produces bigger clouds. The PG/VG ratio you choose will be based on personal preference, and there are a wide range of options on offer from e-juice manufacturers.
