What is a vape pen? If you have visions of writing your signature in scented cloud-like font, I've got bad news for you. However, if you want a compact, convenient device for vaping then a vape pen is the perfect choice. The term vape pen refers to electronic cigarettes that resemble, you guessed it; a pen. These differ from 'cigalikes', which more closely resemble cigarettes, or various 'mods', which have been put together from various parts and often have a bulkier appearance.
Is it an E-Cig?
Yes, it is. With all the different terms flying about it can be hard to get to the bottom of it all. E-cig, electronic cigarette, vape pen, mod, APV; they all largely mean the same thing, although they're not always interchangeable. For instance, 'cigalikes', which closely resemble regular cigarettes, aren't the same as vape pens, even though they're both types of electronic cigarette.
'Mod' can sometimes refer to a vape pen, but it could also refer to specific parts of one, such as a tank. APV's (advanced personal vaporisers) are generally e-cigs with extra modifications, like what a vape pen would look like after Xzibit and his crew got their hands on it.
Confused yet? Don't worry, you'll get it.
The (Vape) Pen is Mightier Than the Sword
It's also mightier than the cigarette. Vape pens might seem complicated, but in reality there's not much too them, since they are usually made up of four main components:
Battery - essential for powering your vape. The battery powers the atomiser
Atomiser - the atomiser is key to the vape, as it heats up your e-liquid of choice to create the vapour. Made of a metal coil/coils
Tank/Clearomiser - a clear tank containing the atomiser and filler material, which is filled with e-liquid
Mouthpiece - the part of the vape pen you inhale from
Modifications
Most vape pens will come with these components, but several more advanced models are out there, and modifications can also be made to alter the vaping experience, or even just the appearance of your vaporiser. If you want to experiment with bigger clouds and variable power levels then you might need a more advanced set-up, but if you're new to vaping then vape pens are a simple and effective starting point.
Which E-Cig is Right for Me?
This is all going to come down to personal preference, as well as your vaping experience level. 'Sub-ohm vaping', which uses low resistance and high power, is great for blowing bigger vapour clouds but you could end up blowing up your equipment if you don't have the necessary knowledge! Cigalikes are a decent transition from smoking thanks to their familiar shape and compact sizes, but battery limitations and the cost of replacing parts could put some people off.
Regular, unmodified vape pens are a great choice for the majority of vapers, since they are compact, versatile and cost-effective. If you're just starting out they're a simple option, but there's no reason you can't stick with a vape pen for your entire vaping life!
