| Is There Nicotine in E-Cigarettes?26 April 2016 This is an easy one - yes, but only if you want there to be. Many e-liquids do indeed contain nicotine, but there's a wide range of different strengths available so all types of vapers are catered for. What Do the Numbers Mean?You've probably seen the strengths of nicotine in e-liquids written as 12mg, 18mg etc. The number refers to the amount of nicotine in each millilitre of liquid (mg/ml). Some brands choose to display this as a percentage instead, so 12mg would be 1.2% instead. Both of these methods mean the same thing. What Strength Should I Use?E-liquids commonly come in 0mg, 3mg, 6mg, 12mg, 18mg, 24mg and even higher nicotine concentrations, depending on the brand in question. Heavy smokers would probably be best suited starting out with a higher concentration, since they would be used to the sensation of the nicotine, while people who smoke less often would be able to choose a lower concentration. If you've decided to take up vaping without smoking beforehand, there's no reason for you to have nicotine in your e-liquid so you should choose a nicotine-free option. Is Nicotine the Devil Incarnate?There seems to be a lot of misinformation around about nicotine, and it has been vilified as one of the worst substances you could put into your body. This seems like an extreme reaction, particularly as cigarettes also contain tobacco, carbon monoxide, tar, ammonia and arsenic, to name a few. These are all substances which have proven to be toxic and to kill, but nicotine has not got the same association. Health RisksNicotine has never been proven to cause cancer, and at the low doses in e-cigs it merely acts as a stimulant. This is not to say nicotine is completely harmless - it is certainly addictive, and one of the main reasons cigarette smokers find it hard to quit. Yet vaping and smoking are significantly different, and since vaping doesn't have anywhere near the number of toxic chemicals it shouldn't be as harmful to vape on a regular basis. The wide range of choice when it comes to concentrations of nicotine also gives vaping an advantage over smoking, as it allows people to slowly wean themselves off while still enjoying the vaping experience. Many people have successfully moved onto 0% nicotine e-liquids after starting at very high concentrations. What's Nicotine Poisoning?Nicotine poisoning can be fatal, but serious/fatal overdoses are extremely rare, due to the fact that it's very hard to actually get nicotine poisoning, especially from vaping. The concentrations of nicotine, even in a strong e-juice, will not be anywhere near high enough to be a serious risk. The only realistic way of poisoning yourself would be to drink the bottle of e-liquid! This poses a slight concern with regards to young children getting hold of the bottles, but much like anything that is designed for adults, if owners are responsible children should not be able to get their hands on any e-liquids.
