You might be new to vaping, or you might have been doing it for a while and only recently stopped to wonder whether there were any side effects of vaping with e-cigs. Unfortunately there's so much propaganda and misinformation floating around that it can sometimes be hard to get to the bottom of it all.
Like with any foreign substance entering the body, some people are likely to experience some side effects to e-cigs, but these are mainly pretty tame, and many people vape with no apparent ill-effects whatsoever. Regardless, here's a few of the things that could potentially occur should you choose to use e-cigs.
Cigarette Withdrawal Symptoms
Many people start vaping as a means to quit smoking traditional cigarettes, and while a lot of people continue using both, many people swap out cigarettes for vaping straight away. Quitting smoking can have many effects on the body, so indirectly this can be a side effect of vaping. Headaches, acne, coughing up tar or bleeding gums can all occur as your body struggles to get used to its new state, but over time these symptoms should go away as your body rights itself.
Side Effects of Vaping
The list of side effects pales in comparison to that of regular cigarettes, which can cause cancer, heart disease and many more serious conditions. Aside from the general issues that may arise due to withdrawal symptoms, here are some of the side effects that are probably attributed to vaping:
Dry skin
Dry mouth
Itchiness
Dizziness (possibly to do with nicotine content)
Headaches
Rashes/burning sensation
Puffy/dry eyes
Many of these side effects are simply down to dehydration, and can be prevented by simply drinking enough fluids. The side effects may also only occur at first, and could go away once you get used to vaping. In rare instances, some of these symptoms could be due to an allergy to ingredients in the e-liquid, most likely PG (propylene glycol). If this is the case, it's a good idea to switch to an e-liquid with a high percentage of VG instead.
Benefits of Vaping For Ex Smokers
Switching from smoking to vaping also has several positives that are worth considering:
Fingernails/fingertips turn from yellowish to clear
Teeth become whiter
Breathing is easier and stamina improves
Food tastes and smells better
Sexual potency increases
Long-Term Effects
This is where things get a bit blurred. Since vaping has only been around a short time, there's simply no way of studying the long-term effects yet. It could be that if you vape for 20 years your head explodes (unlikely), but equally, more study over time could find that vaping is a comparatively safe pastime. Inhaling anything but pure fresh air is a bit of a gamble, but then again so is getting into your car every morning, going on a plane or even using a vending machine (which is more likely to kill you than a shark). Swimming in shark-infested waters is also a gamble, but that one's more avoidable. Unless your plane crashes... but I digress.
